Program Overview

Towson University is pleased to offer a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Special Education at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). This program is specifically designed for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) employees who already possess, at a minimum, an undergraduate degree and are seeking initial teacher certification. Students may apply for one of three tracks: Special Education–Early Childhood Education (birth–grade 3), Special Education–Elementary/Middle Education (grades 1–8), or Special Education–Secondary Education (grades 9–12).

The M.A.T. in Special Education is a cohort program that follows a specific course sequence and timeframe for completion, with new cohorts beginning each fall semester. Towson University's College of Education has a rich history of collaboration with Maryland's public school systems and state educational agencies. Through the Towson Learning Network, the College of Education helps meet the ongoing educational needs of in-service teachers and local school systems.
