Dr. Jeffrey R. AshMeet Dr. Jeffrey R. Ash

Jeffrey R. Ash, Ed.D. is the Universities at Shady Grove's first Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Officer. A nationally recognized leader in higher education, Dr. Ash brings more than 20 years of experience across the University System of Maryland in advancing inclusive organizational culture, equitable practices, and student and employee success.

Before joining USG in 2022, Dr. Ash served as Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, where he helped lead nationally recognized diversity and inclusion initiatives. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the University of Maryland School of Nursing, while contributing to regional and national organizations dedicated to advancing equity in higher education.

At USG, Dr. Ash leads the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging and oversees the implementation of the university's Inclusive Excellence Strategic Plan, fostering a campus culture where every member of the community feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to thrive.

The office provides oversight and guidance throughout the recruitment process, reviewing searches to promote equal opportunity, reduce bias, and support hiring practices that align with institutional policies and best practices.

Through strategic planning, partnerships, and accountability, the office helps embed diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging into the policies, practices, and culture that shape the USG experience.


Our DEIB Strategic Action Plan

The work of Inclusive Excellence is guided by USG's Five-Year Strategic Action Plan. Developed through a collaborative process involving students, faculty, staff, alumni, board members, and community partners, the framework establishes the priorities that guide our initiatives, partnerships, and accountability across campus. The goals and objectives below are presented as adopted by the Strategic Plan Task Force and university leadership.

Goal 1: Belonging

Ensure that the USG environment and culture are inclusive, welcoming, and supportive for students, staff, faculty and visitors.

Objectives

  • Prioritize addressing the organizational structure to accomplish the goals of the DEIB strategy.
  • Develop a signature “Front Door” experience through a physical welcome space, and coordinated programming and messaging.
  • Create a more all-encompassing disability support and accessibility support services portfolio.
  • Establish multilingual/multicultural presence on campus, in media/campus collateral, and on webpage.
  • Form affinity groups to realize and actuate the DEIB strategic goals.
Goal 2: Shared Commitment

Communicate how Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) are embedded into USG’s mission, vision, and values.

Objectives

  • Construct a DEIB commitment statement representative of all stakeholders.
  • Communicate USG’s DEIB story through a champion program to carry the message and enrich campus culture.
  • Develop a comprehensive communication plan that conveys the goals and expectations of the DEIB work at USG.
Goal 3: Collaboration

Deepen strategic partnerships and collaborations across entities in the USG community and the regional community.

Objectives

  • Define the hallmarks of mutually beneficial partnerships that enable organizational goal achievement. 
  • Grow our footprint as an anchor institution that connects our community at large to resources that foster wealth building and empowerment to thrive. 
  • Orchestrate opportunities for intentional academic partner relationship building.
Goal 4: Equity in Practice

Institutionalize practices with administrative procedures that ensure equitable accountability in systemic processes across departments.

Objectives

  • Develop and distribute an operating equity rubric that ensures adherence to standards of practice and procedures across units.
  • Hold students, staff and faculty responsible for upholding the DEIB mission by broadening existing tools as measures of accountability..
  • Necessitate timely consultation with broad representation concerning operational decisions and reporting.
Goal 5: Recruitment & Retention

Recruit, retain, and engage students, faculty, and staff whose diverse backgrounds and perspectives demonstrate USG’s commitment to inclusive excellence.

Objectives

  • Establish a campus community that is reflective of local/state demographic trends. 
  • Create a universally welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff to thrive at USG.
  • Curate unique engagement opportunities for all community members to share their backgrounds, perspectives and lived experiences.
