Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College and the Universities at Shady Grove, are committed to supporting students in their journey to become prepared for the world of work.

To increase equitable access to supports which enable successful employment and retention, Montgomery County educators collaborated to develop a shared set of career competencies which reflect the key behaviors that employers, across all industries and functional areas, are seeking in graduates entering the world of work. This initiative has been branded Hire U.

Hire U is a Montgomery County educational pathway initiative [MCPS-MC-USG], where each educational partner has collaborated and agreed to the definitions and behavioral characteristics of each of the nine core competencies. While each of the partner institutions has the flexibility in how to implement and market the core competencies to their respective student populations - all three institutions have committed to continuous collaboration on the overarching core competency framework and goals, giving Montgomery County students the unique opportunity to build sought-after career skills progressively with consistency, across this educational ecosystem.

Using the Montgomery County core competencies framework, students and staff can identify and engage in competency-building experiences inside and outside of the classroom. Students can identify competency deficits, then track their development of these competencies over time, and learn how to articulate those competency-based experiences to employers, graduate programs, and more. By organizing their competency-building experiences around a framework that is consistent throughout the educational pathway and easy to understand, Montgomery County students can better leverage their top-notch educational and extracurricular experiences to reach their personal and professional goals.
