This position is located at The Universities at Shady Grove, Rockville, MD.

The Assistant Manager, Facilities will provide operational leadership and oversight across all campus buildings, utilities and parking structures at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) for Buildings 1, 2, 3 and 4 (approximately 540,000 sq ft); one five-story, 700-car capacity parking garage; and one six-story, 600-car capacity parking garage on campus.

The position requires extensive interaction with faculty and technical staff, regulatory and inspection personnel, contractors, consultants and other University personnel.

Physical Demands: Work may be performed in both an office environment and in the field. Incumbent may be required to perform hands-on tasks as well as to inspect the work of others, which will require the ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, including confined spaces, lifting, bending, stooping, working at heights and in adverse conditions. Incumbent must be able to wear and work in personal protective equipment, including safety footwear that is provided by the University.

This position is considered “Essential” and is subject to 24-hour, 7 day/week span of operations. Work is generally performed during normal working hours, however it is expected that those in this position work whenever necessary to ensure the facility is running safely and efficiently at all times. Afterhours service calls may be necessary during summer months and times of extreme inclement weather.

Licenses/Certifications Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland Class C driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than 6 points. Maryland 2nd Class Stationary Engineer’s License


Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Three (3) years of housekeeping, facilities, operations, construction, or maintenance experience. Six (6) months of experience leading or supervising professional staff.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of building systems.

Knowledge of building operations requirements.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.

Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments.

Additional Job Details
Preferences:

  • At least three (3) years experience in a lead or supervisory capacity; including oversight and management of mechanical and laboratory systems with knowledge of building mechanical systems design, operations and repairs
  • Experience with Siemens APOGEE Building Automation System / Advantage Navigator / Desigo is strongly preferred
  • Operating experience with Lutron Light Controls
  • Ability to coordinate work in a multi-facility environment
  • Knowledge of building construction and trades including but not limited to: HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Emergency Generators, elevators, life safety, and, in laboratory environments, mechanical, laboratory gas and water filtration, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems associated with autoclaves, glass washers, environmental chambers, ultra -cold freezers, bio-safety cabinets, fume hoods and other equipment used for the purposes of maintaining laboratory services.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate blueprints, diagrams, schematics and engineering specifications.
