The USG Makerspaces are open to the entire USG community and provide a collaborative, hands-on environment where ideas turn into real-world prototypes. With a Fabrication Shop, an Electronics and 3D Printing Lab, and dedicated Student Workspace, the Makerspaces give users the tools, space, and support to design, build, test, and refine projects from start to finish. Whether you’re developing a class assignment, advancing research, or exploring a new concept, these labs make it easier to move quickly from early sketches to iterative prototypes to final assembly using both additive and subtractive manufacturing methods. After a brief orientation and required safety training, users can reserve lab time and request guidance as needed to keep projects moving forward.

EQUIPMENT ACCESS

  • You can only access equipment you are authorized to use.
  • You must complete an online safety training and quiz as well as an in-person orientation before entering makerspace rooms and accessing any equipment.
  • Individual equipment authorization trainings are available on Canvas, followed by an in-person assessment.
  • Shop and tool authorization test results will be available online.

Makerspace Laboratories

Fabrication Shop

The Fabrication Shop is the centerpiece of the USG Makerspaces, built to support USG partner programs that rely on specialized fabrication equipment. The shop offers a wide range of tools for cutting, shaping, and finishing parts, including a water jet, CNC router, mill, lathe, metal brake, CO2 laser engraver, thermal vacuum former, drill press, band saw, bench grinder, and a full set of hand tools.

Location: Building 4, Room G319

Electronics & 3D Print Lab

The Electronics & 3D Print Lab is a dedicated space for building and testing electronics, including electrical component assembly, soldering, and circuit work. It also houses the Makerspaces’ 3D printers, supporting rapid prototyping and print-ready parts for class projects and research. Students can use the 3D printers during open hours, or submit a print request through the Fab Shop Manager when they need help preparing files or scheduling a job. Students and programs must provide their own filament for 3D printing.

Location: Building 4, Room G323

Independent Student Workspace

The Independent Student Workspaces give student teams a place to meet, plan, and build while working on capstone and other course work. A selection of hand tools is available, and 3D printing is also available to support prototyping for course and project work. Access is limited to students actively enrolled in a USG program with a valid USG ID, and a short orientation is required. Contact the Fab Shop Manager to request access. The spaces are available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
