Laboratory Services

Laboratory Services manages, maintains, and consults on all laboratory operations at USG. The Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Building anchors a network of teaching and research labs that support a diverse range of programs. We operate on a shared-use model: each lab has a primary program that leads activity in the space, and additional courses are scheduled when aligned with instructional needs. This model increases utilization, avoids duplicate buildouts, and broadens student exposure to instruments and techniques.

Environmental Health and Safety

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) promotes laboratory safety, occupational safety, environmental compliance and hazardous waste management on campus. Our goal is to maintain a safe and healthful educational environment for the USG community by applying regulatory requirements and standards of care to protect personnel and the environment.

Innovation and Fabrication Labs

The Makerspaces are open to the entire USG community and serve as the hands-on hub for our engineering programs. The suite includes a fabrication shop, an electronics lab with 3D printers, and a dedicated student workspace. Collectively, the labs support prototyping, rapid iteration, additive and subtractive manufacturing, and final assembly. A brief orientation is required before first use, after which users can reserve time and request assistance as needed.

To get started in the Makerspaces, complete the required safety training on Canvas and contact the Fab Shop Manager to schedule your in-person orientation.

Shared Laboratories and Resources

PRISM

The Platform for Research, Imaging, Sequencing, and Measurement is USG's shared advanced instrumentation lab. It concentrates tools that students are likely to encounter in the biotech workforce and provides increased opportunities for experiential learning via higher-level analysis and hands-on method development. Faculty and students have access to everything from imaging and microscopy to genomics preparation and analytical measurement, with guidance available for experimental setup and troubleshooting. All equipment in the PRISM Lab is reservable through the USG EMS platform.
Location: Building 4, Room 4334

Sterilization and Glass Washing

Autoclaves and glass washers are available for sterilization and glassware cleaning. Request access through Laboratory Services.
Location: Building 4, Room 4330

Shared Tissue Culture

A shared tissue culture lab is available for programs that lack culture equipment in their primary lab space. The lab also houses the building’s wet ice machine, Type I purified water, and fluorescent microscopy. This space is reservable through EMS.
Location: Building 4, Room 4326

Laboratory Equipment

USG maintains a comprehensive inventory of high-spec equipment that supports coursework, capstone projects, and faculty research across disciplines ranging from life sciences to engineering. In most cases, this inventory covers all needs. Programs should submit requests for additional equipment, including self-funded or donated instruments for specific programs, through the Project Request Form at the link below. Requestors should fill out the Project Request Form during the planning stage and obtain approval before any purchase or placement. All USG-owned equipment in service receives manufacturer-recommended preventive maintenance for reliable performance. See the laboratory equipment inventory at the link below for room number, description, make and model, and quantity by room.
