The information below details various parts of the process behind our USG Scholarship Application available to all undergraduate and graduate students completing courses at USG each Fall and Spring semester. Please see the answers pertaining to different attributes of our awarding process as well as expectations and responsibilities of student applicants.
The Universities at Shady Grove awards a variety of third-party scholarships each semester. In addition to federal and state grants awarded on the basis of financial need, various private scholarships are available for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in programs at USG. These scholarships are created with contributions from private donors including the USG Board of Advisors, local businesses, foundations, community organizations and individual donors.
The Fall Scholarship Application will be available on March 1st. The priority deadline to submit this application is June 30th and the final deadline is July 31st.
The Spring Scholarship Application will be available on September 1st. The priority deadline to submit this application is November 30th and the final deadline is December 31st.
The amount of available funding varies each semester but can range from $500 - full tuition and fees.
Although it is not required, many scholarships programs prefer students with leadership and those who participate in extracurricular activities.
Students must live in Montgomery County and must be eligible and qualify for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or a Maryland State Financial Aid Application (MSFAA) to be considered. When completing your USG Scholarship application, there will be a link provided to verify your district. In order to be considered, it is important that the correct district is selected on your application. All applicants will be required to create a username and accept their awards through the Maryland Higher Education Commission. We also recommend identifying your district representatives and reaching out individually for any specific opportunities through each respective office.
In order to qualify for a USG scholarship, students must be enrolled in a course at USG. However, eligibility requirements vary by scholarship and some require that undergraduate students be enrolled and maintain either a part-time schedule (6 credits) or full-time schedule (12 credits or more), or 9 credits or more for graduate students.
Yes. Students are encouraged to apply for USG scholarships as well as scholarships offered by their home institution.
All students who qualify to complete the FAFSA should complete their application by the State and institution deadlines. By completing the FAFSA, students may be eligible to receive need based, institutional and state aid.
The FAFSA application typically opens around October prior to the upcoming academic year. For example, the 2026-2027 FAFSA application became available on October 1st, 2025 for students to complete for consideration of federal aid for their academic courses taking place from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. This timeline then repeats for each consecutive academic year.
The priority deadline for most home institutions is March 1st of the respective academic year, but students can still complete a FAFSA for the academic year after this date. To apply, please visit their main page and create an FSA ID account.
Need-based scholarships are scholarships that take a student's financial need into consideration during the awarding process. The most common form of need-based scholarship is a need-based grant, such as a Pell Grant. These are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need based on the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Submitting the FAFSA by the priority deadline is the only requirement to be automatically considered for a need-based grant.

Merit-based scholarships are primarily awarded to students based on academic performance.
Grants are funds awarded to students based on financial need as calculated by the FAFSA. Grants do not need to be repaid.
The interest on subsidized loans does not start accruing until after you graduate because the interest is paid by the Federal Government. However, with unsubsidized loans the interest begins accruing as soon as your loan is disbursed. View more information here on Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans.
A disbursement is a payout of loans, scholarships, and/or grants to your home institution. The funds are posted to your student account to pay towards the current balance for the semester. There is a fall and spring disbursement. The earliest funds will arrive is 10 days before the first day of class for each semester.
GPA requirements vary by scholarship. For merit based scholarships, most require applicants to have a 3.0 or higher.
The USG Scholarship application does not require students to submit a personal statement. However, students who are being considered for a specific scholarship may be asked to submit personal statement or additional documents to be considered.
All applicants must include the following:
- Most recent unofficial transcript
- FAFSA Submission Summary (previously known as the Student Aid Report [SAR])
- Certificate of Finances (if applicable)
- Copy of your Financial Aid Package from your Home Institution (if applicable)
- Enrollment verification or schedule of classes. If newly admitted, a letter of acceptance from the home institution or Program Director will be accepted instead.
Students will be notified of their application status by the second week of each semester, however they can check the status of their application throughout the scholarship review process by logging into their student scholarship account.
The awarded funds are applied directly to the student’s university account to pay charges for tuition and fees. The disbursement takes approximately eight weeks to process. Because scholarships checks are sent AFTER the semester has begun, students must be prepared to cover the cost of their tuition before having their scholarship aid applied to their account. If there is a credit on the student's account after the scholarship has applied, the student will receive a refund through their home campus accounting office. We highly recommend you enroll in direct deposit for your refund with your home institution.
Yes. Students must be enrolled in order to receive their scholarship award.
Requirements vary by scholarship; the criteria will be outlined in your award letter. Some scholarships require that you update and re-submit a scholarship application each semester.
In order to be considered for the Internship and Healthcare Scholarships, students must have a secured internship and clinical rotation for the semester and provide required documentation.
Yes- All students who wish to be considered for scholarships, should submit for each semester. If you apply for scholarships at the beginning of the academic year (fall semester) and receive funding for fall and spring, you are not required to submit an application for the spring semester, unless you want to be considered for additional scholarships.
The scholarship awarding process includes financial aid and enrollment verification. The verification process is done in accordance with the add/drop date at your home institution. Because students must be enrolled, this allows adequate time for students to be enrolled prior to USG Scholarship selections. The disbursement takes approximately eight weeks to process. Because scholarships checks are sent AFTER the semester has begun, students must be prepared to cover the cost of their tuition before having their scholarship aid applied to their account.
To show gratitude and appreciation to our donors, USG requires that all recipients send a letter of thanks to their respective donors. Scholarship donors are generous and caring people who give to support the educational endeavors of students like you. Receiving a well-written thank you note from the student who received their scholarship is always special and lets the donor know how much you appreciate their support. Your note reminds them why they gave in the first place and often helps secure continuing gifts for future students.
Suggestions for your Thank You Letter:
- Keep your letter to one page.
- Convey your message in a clear and concise manner.
- Use your resume as a reference. Work or research experiences, study abroad, involvement in student organizations or student projects are all good topics to include in your letter, as well as your current academic progress and next steps.
- Proofread your letter. Make sure the donor's name and the name of the scholarship are correct. Check for spelling and grammar mistakes. Sometimes it is hard to proof your own work, so have someone else read the letter before finalizing it.
Please login to your account and attach your thank you letter, addressing the Donors listed on your award letter within 30 days of this notification. Alternatively, email your letter to usg-scholarships@umd.edu. Failure to do so may impact the release of your scholarship.
Award Letter Example:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith:
First paragraph: Explain why you are writing the letter. Be sure to identify your scholarship, home institution, and the program you are enrolled in.
Second (and possibly third) paragraph: Tell the donor a little about yourself. You can briefly describe your research, any special programs or student organizations in which you participate, student projects, work experience, leadership experience, etc. You can also write about your academic progress and plans after you graduate.
Closing paragraph: Thank your donor again for the scholarship and let the donor know how much you appreciate their generous contribution to your education and to USG.
