At commencement, your regalia tells a story.

A student poses with their Hire U cord at the Celebrate U event where students are recognized for extra-curricular achievements.

That story can include your degree, institution and degree status, distinguished academic honors, service affiliations, and more. The Hire U graduation cord can be a part of your story, and the campus-wide challenge is on. Are you game?

Hire U consists of nine core competencies employers consistently rank as essential including communication, teamwork, leadership, and professionalism. Through the online app Suitable, you can compete with peers in the leaderboard, earning points by participating in workshops, leadership experiences, career programs and skill-building events connected to competencies.

Every workshop you attend, leadership event you join, and reflection you complete moves you higher on the leaderboard. With graduation approaching in late spring, here’s how you qualify for the cord, which can show off your career-ready skills.

  1. Earn 150 points in a single competency area.
Once you reach 150 points, you unlock a focused post-assessment and reflection experience structured like mock interview questions.

  2. Complete the post-assessment.
When approved, you earn a Competency Achievement in that area.

  3. Earn three Competency Achievements.
Achieve distinction in three separate competency areas, and you qualify to receive the Hire U graduation cord.

During their time at USG, students can complete as many competency achievements as they like, though many will choose three areas in which they’re weakest and most in need of growth to focus on.

“We don’t say that one competency is more important than another for a given industry,” says Erin Moore, Student Affairs and Career Readiness Operations coordinator.  “They’re generalized and equally important across all industries. These are soft skills that every student needs.”

Three achievements. One cord. A visible symbol at graduation to celebrate your investment in your future.
