The Universities at Shady Grove welcomes MCPS/MC Dual Enrolled students to explore bachelor's degree program options offered at our convenient and affordable campus. The USG campus provides a smaller, close-knit environment for students to more deeply engage in their studies, with their professors and peers, and in extracurricular activities, making USG an ideal next step for dual enrolled students. Most programs offered at USG utilize a cohort-based structure, similar to that of dual enrollment programs. Students are able to develop deeper relationships with their peers and professors than they would at a main campus. Dual enrolled students who have gone on to enroll in a program offered at the USG campus have reported their preference for the smaller campus environment and cohort-style learning set-up.

Admissions for Dual Enrolled Students

There is no separate application for USG. Students looking to enroll in a program at USG apply directly to the university offering their desired program and follow that school’s admission requirements.

All incoming undergraduate students at the Universities of Shady Grove (USG) must have completed approximately 60 college credits in order to enroll in a program offered at the USG campus. Only 300 and 400 level courses are offered at USG, so students must complete their program’s lower level prerequisite course requirements prior to enrolling. Typically, this means that most students applying to an undergraduate program offered at the USG campus are considered Transfer Students. However, for Dual Enrolled Students, particularly those in Early College, this can become more complex.

The University System of Maryland defines a transfer student as having completed at least 12 hours of college credit post-high school graduation. If you will complete your associate's degree prior to your high school graduation, you may have to complete a different application process to be considered for admission to a program offered at the USG campus, depending on the institution to which you will apply. All dual enrolled students interested in applying to a program offered at USG should speak with a USG Transfer Coach, a representative from their program of interest, and an admissions representative from their institution of interest.

Degree Programs

Students interested in a program offered at USG should contact the program representative for their program of interest. Program representatives at USG are degree-specific representatives from the nine partner universities who specialize in helping students make a smooth transition from their previous institution to finishing their degree at USG. The earlier in your college career you get in touch with the program representative for your desired program at USG, the more seamless your transfer experience will be. Your program representative will be able to help you plan your first two years as efficiently as possible and ensure you have covered all of the necessary program prerequisites prior to transferring.

FIND A PROGRAM

As an Early College student who transferred to USG under UMD’s Biological Science program, I have a unique perspective when it comes to why I chose this campus for my studies as opposed to going to College Park. There is a sense of community, safety, opportunity, and beauty here at USG that I looked forward to. I also wanted to continue my education close to home, as well as have opportunities to work, that this area provides, if needed as I studied.
