Biological Waste
EHS maintains a biohazardous waste collection program where the waste stream is classified by federal, state, and local regulations as special medical waste. This is a solid waste stream that is disposed of using red bags and sharps containers. The ultimate fate of special medical waste is incineration.
USG faculty, staff, and students who have biohazardous waste, or special medical waste, management responsibilities on campus must take Biohazard Waste Disposal Training annually through the SciShield safety management platform. If you do not have an account on SciShield, contact EHS and we will set one up for you.
To schedule a pickup for full biohazardous waste bins (red bags, burn boxes), or sharps containers, contact EHS. Unless the sharps container is large, in most instances it can be disposed of in a biohazardous waste bin. Although we do supply biohazardous waste bins, academic programs are responsible for supplying their own sharps containers.
