Program Overview

Prepare for an exciting scientific career in the rapidly growing multidisciplinary field of fermentation science, which includes plant science, food and nutritional sciences, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

The B.S. in Fermentation Science offers a curriculum in the fundamental principles of physical, biological and behavioral sciences and processing to understand the complex materials used as raw precursors or final food products and beverages of fermentation. Students participate in industrial internships for practical experience and experiential learning with fermentation industries.

In addition to earning the B.S. from the University of Maryland, graduates acquire an excellent foundation for professional pursuits in traditional industries, such as breweries, wineries and distilleries, as well as growing niche industries, such as kombucha, kefir, tempeh and kimchi.

The B.S. in Fermentation Science is offered through the University’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR), which embodies UMD’s land-grant mission with a commitment to eliminate hunger, preserve natural resources, improve quality of life and empower the next generation through world-class education.
